The US Patent and Trademark Office will be welcoming in 2021 with a slate of changes to its existing filing fee schedule. These changes will go into effect January 2, 2021, and so prospective trademark applicants and existing trademark owners need to be aware of how they may be impacted.
The changes that will be of most concern to small business owners is the increase in application filing fees on a per class basis. Prospective applicants will need to consider whether the increased filing costs may cause them to limit the scope of applications to register or otherwise change their trademark registration strategy.
